Experiment by Phoenix-area newspaper fails

Poynter Institute analyst Rick Edmonds analyzes why a shift to three-days-a-week publication didn't save the East Valley Tribune in the suburban Phoenix area.  Edmonds says the paper is one of several attempting to shift to web-only publication by first cutting back on the print edition.  Newspaper officials told Edmonds that they needed more time for the experiment to work.  Check out Edmonds' story here.

El Tecolote's Juan Gonzales Named a "Local Hero"

Juan Gonzales, the founding editor of El Tecolote newspaper in San Francisco's Mission District, has been named a "Local Hero" by KQED and Wells Fargo Bank.  The award was announced as part of the observance of Latino Heritage Month in September.  Gonzales, also chair of the Journalism Department at City College, started El Tecolote, a nonprofit, bilingual (Spanish and English) newspaper, in 1970.  Also accorded "Local Hero" status were Leticia Hernandez of GirlSource and Saul Hidalgo L. of Jamestown Community Center.
